THE RITUAL ORDER

The Tamil wedding rituals we plan, in sequence

Families and priests vary the order; this is the common sequence we build the run sheet around.

  1. Nischayathartham (engagement). The families exchange the thamboolam plates, the lagna pathirikai is read and the muhurtham fixed.
  2. Pandha kaal and vratham. The bamboo pole is planted to bless the venue; the bride and groom observe the vratham with the sacred thread tied the morning before.
  3. Reception. In the Tamil order the reception usually comes first, the evening before the muhurtham, at a hall or hotel.
  4. Kasi yatrai. The groom sets off for Kasi with his umbrella and walking stick and is persuaded back by the bride’s father.
  5. Oonjal. The couple are seated on the decorated swing, fed milk and banana by the elders, while the women sing and circle with coloured rice balls to ward off the evil eye.
  6. Kanyadanam and muhurtham. The bride sits on her father’s lap for the giving away; the vadhyar leads the homam as the muhurtham approaches.
  7. Mangalya dharanam. The groom ties the thali with three knots as the nadaswaram plays at full volume and the elders shower akshadai.
  8. Saptapadi and ammi midhithal. Seven steps around the fire; the groom places the bride’s foot on the grinding stone and slips on the metti.
  9. Nalangu. The playful afternoon session: rolling the coconut, finding the ring, songs and teasing between the two families.
  10. Sammandhi mariyadhai and grihapravesham. The families exchange honours; the bride is welcomed to the groom’s home with aarti.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT

Planning a Tamil wedding in Bangalore

Two days, one run sheet

Reception the evening before, muhurtham at dawn, nalangu after lunch. We run it as one event with the hall, the kitchen and the photographers scheduled for both days.

Vadhyar and mandapam list

Iyer, Iyengar, Chettiar, Mudaliar and Pillai families vary the sequence. We take the order from your vadhyar and prepare the mandapam list with them: thali and koorai pudavai, oonjal items, kasi yatrai props, ammi, metti, the homam materials and seer varisai trays.

Tamil menus

Full banana-leaf service with sambar, rasam, poriyal, kootu, vadai, payasam and the morning tiffin after the muhurtham, from caterers who serve Tamil weddings every week.

Nadaswaram and the muhurtham minute

The nadaswaram and thavil set, the akshadai and the photographers all have to be in place for one minute. We stage it.

Families from Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai

Stay blocks near the mantapa, transport for a 6 a.m. muhurtham, and a hospitality desk with filter coffee.

Décor in Tamil style

Thoranam and banana stems at the entrance, jasmine and kanakambaram at the mandapam, the oonjal dressed in flowers, and a reception stage the evening before.

WHERE

Venues that suit Tamil weddings

Kalyana mantapas and community halls across Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar and JP Nagar suit traditional morning muhurtams with a homam; hotel banquets in Whitefield, Hebbal and on Old Airport Road suit evening receptions; resorts towards Nandi Hills, Kanakapura Road and Bannerghatta Road suit two-day celebrations with stay. We shortlist two or three for your guest count, visit them with you and handle the venue’s paperwork. See how we work in Jayanagar, Whitefield and Hebbal.

QUESTIONS

Questions couples ask

How much does a Tamil wedding cost in Bangalore?
An intimate Tamil kalyanam of 50–150 guests at a mantapa starts around ₹3 lakh with BillionEvents (₹2,99,999 + GST), excluding hall rental and per-plate food. Reception plus muhurtham for 150–350 guests runs ₹7–14 lakh; larger hotel weddings ₹15 lakh and above.
Do you arrange the vadhyar, nadaswaram and mandapam items?
Yes. We work with your family vadhyar or arrange one, book the nadaswaram and thavil set, and prepare the full mandapam list with the priest so nothing is bought on the morning.
Can you handle a 5 a.m. muhurtham?
Yes. Early muhurthams are standard in Tamil weddings. We schedule venue entry the previous evening, have the kitchen serving coffee and tiffin from 5 a.m., and arrange transport for guests.
Is the reception always before the wedding?
In most Tamil families, yes: reception the evening before, muhurtham the next morning. Some families hold it after. We plan either order.
Do you plan Tamil weddings combined with other traditions?
Yes. Tamil–Kannada, Tamil–Telugu, Tamil–Malayali and Tamil–Christian weddings are common in Bangalore; we put both sequences and both priests on one run sheet.
