THE RITUAL ORDER

The Kannada wedding rituals we plan, in sequence

Families and priests vary the order; this is the common sequence we build the run sheet around.

  1. Nischaya tamboola (engagement). The families exchange betel leaves, areca, fruit and clothes; the lagna patrike is read and the date fixed.
  2. Naandi and dev karya. Invocation of the ancestors and the family deity at each home, with a small homam, a few days before the wedding.
  3. Chappara puje and var puje. The pandal pillars are blessed; the groom is received at the mantapa by the bride’s family with aarti and the var puje.
  4. Kashi yatre. The groom’s mock pilgrimage, persuaded back by the bride’s father or maternal uncle. Comic, musical and a favourite of photographers.
  5. Dhare herdu. The signature Kannada ritual: the bride’s parents pour sanctified water over the couple’s joined hands while a coconut rests on them, giving the bride away.
  6. Mangalya dharane and saptapadi. The groom ties the mangalsutra at the muhurta; the couple take seven steps around the homam with the priest’s vows.
  7. Okuli and the games. Finding the ring in a pot of coloured water, and the playful contests between the families after the ceremony.
  8. Griha pravesha. The bride enters the groom’s home, kicking over the rice-filled measure at the threshold; often the same evening or the next day.
  9. Reception. A hall or hotel reception the same evening or the next, frequently the larger of the two gatherings in Bangalore.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT

Planning a Kannada wedding in Bangalore

Mantapa-first planning

Bangalore’s kalyana mantapas in Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram and Rajajinagar were built for Kannada weddings: a stage with homam space, a dining hall and family rooms. We know which ones allow early entry for a dawn muhurta.

Community variations

Vokkaliga, Lingayat, Madhwa and Smartha families order and name some rituals differently. We take the sequence from your priest and build the sheet around it rather than a template.

Karnataka menus

Bisi bele bath, kosambari, holige, kesari bath, chitranna and a proper banana-leaf service, from caterers who cook it every weekend.

Dhare herdu and the muhurta

The two moments the families care about most happen within minutes of each other. We stage the mantapa, the water and the photographers so neither is missed.

Two cities, one wedding

Families from Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru or Tumakuru: transport, stay blocks and a hospitality desk at the mantapa.

Décor in Kannada style

Banana stems and tender coconut at the entrance, jasmine and marigold at the mantapa, brass lamps, and a reception set that changes the hall for the evening.

WHERE

Venues that suit Kannada weddings

Kalyana mantapas and community halls across Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar and JP Nagar suit traditional morning muhurtams with a homam; hotel banquets in Whitefield, Hebbal and on Old Airport Road suit evening receptions; resorts towards Nandi Hills, Kanakapura Road and Bannerghatta Road suit two-day celebrations with stay. We shortlist two or three for your guest count, visit them with you and handle the venue’s paperwork. See how we work in Jayanagar, Whitefield and Hebbal.

QUESTIONS

Questions couples ask

How much does a Kannada wedding cost in Bangalore?
An intimate Kannada maduve of 50–150 guests at a mantapa starts around ₹3 lakh with BillionEvents (₹2,99,999 + GST), excluding the hall and per-plate food. Two functions for 150–350 guests run ₹7–14 lakh; large receptions in hotels take it to ₹15 lakh and above.
Do you work with our family priest?
Yes. Your purohit sets the ritual order and the muhurta; we prepare the homam, mantapa items and the run sheet with them. If you need a Kannada-speaking priest, we arrange one.
Which mantapas in Bangalore do you recommend for a Kannada wedding?
It depends on guest count and area. We shortlist two or three in Jayanagar, Basavanagudi, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, JP Nagar or near your home, visit them with you and handle the booking paperwork.
Can the reception be at a different venue from the muhurta?
Yes, and in Bangalore it usually is: a morning muhurta at a mantapa and an evening reception at a hotel or larger hall. We run both with one team.
Do you plan inter-community Kannada weddings?
Yes. Kannada–Telugu, Kannada–Tamil and Kannada–Christian weddings are common in Bangalore; we put both ritual sequences and both priests on one run sheet.
